FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

What is GIS?

GIS, or geographical information systems, is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface. GIS can show many different kinds of data on one map. This enables people to more easily see, analyze, and understand patterns and relationships.

How does GIS work?

All data collected uses a location reference system. Data collected at a particular location can be compared with other information, and through these relationships, conclusions can be made to explain and predict future occurrences. GIS allows the decision make to visualize and understand the relationship of information inputted to make better management decisions.

What forms of data does GIS use?

A GIS makes it possible to link, or integrate, information that is difficult to associate through other means. GIS can be used to combine aerial photographs, tabular data, digital satellite data or numerous other forms of data to display a spatial representation of all this information.

What is ArcGIS?

ArcGIS is a collection of GIS software products that provide the necessary tools to capture, manage, analyze, and displaying geographically reference information.

Cloud-Based Applications

What is the Cloud?

The cloud is a network of servers, and each server has a different function. Some servers use computing power to run applications or “deliver a service”.

Where is my data?

Digital data is stored in logical pools, the physical storage spans multiple servers (and often locations), and the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company.

What is required to support a cloud service?

As cloud solutions are generally hosted off site, the technology requirements are typically as simple as a common web browser and Internet connection. There are no server and infrastructure requirements and no additional IT workload to administer and support a cloud solution.

How often are updates performed, & who is responsible for doing that?

Technology updates are different for each solution. Since cloud-based solutions are typically subscription based, updates should be expected on a routine basis, and the provider is responsible for feature updates, enhancements, security and performance improvements.

Is it possible to integrate data in the cloud with other systems?

Most cloud-based solutions have the capability to integrate with other systems. Orbis’ applications are customized; thus, we are able to appease the majority of integration requests.

What is SaaS?

Software as a Service (SaaS) is software that is owned, delivered and managed remotely by one or more providers. The provider delivers software based on one set of common code and data definitions that is consumed in a one-to-many model by all contracted customers, at any time, on a pay-for-use basis or as a subscription based on used metrics.
