What is GIS?
A geographic information system (GIS) uses computers and software for capturing, storing, integrating, manipulating, analyzing, and displaying data referenced by geographic coordinates. A GIS takes the attribute information stored in a database or spreadsheet and spatially enables the data. By taking data from a database and adding a spatial component, you are able to understand, question, interpret, and re-evaluate your data in ways simply not possible while using a standard database. With your data spatially enabled, you can ask other questions and make better informed decisions.
